Building a park and building opportunities

Bank Street Park is more than a new park; it’s about changing the face of construction in NSW.

In a first for NSW, this major construction project will proactively target a minimum goal of 40% and a stretch goal of 50% women working on site, far exceeding the industry average of just 12%. The initiative is being delivered through the NSW Government Women in Construction (WiC) Program, led by Infrastructure NSW in partnership with BESIX Watpac.

The WIC program is a NSW Government initiative focused on increasing women’s participation across the construction sector by removing barriers, creating desire and awareness, supporting long-term careers, and driving accountability for change.

To achieve the target, the team embedded workforce targets into procurement, are planning internship, pre-employment and apprenticeship programs, and culture-building initiatives such as a male allyship program and unconscious bias training.

Additionally, the project has inclusive and thoughtfully designed site amenities including equal-sized bathrooms and changerooms with full-length doors for privacy and sanitary bins in all cubicles, complete separation of men’s and women’s facilities, privacy screens for female workers to move between bathrooms and changerooms, and a multi-purpose space for breastfeeding, prayer or other uses.
